SleepPrint Scoring System

SleepPrint is Nappedia's 1-10 mattress score. It combines 12 weighted categories, verified evidence, and a separate sleeper-fit layer so readers can see both the overall quality of a mattress and whether it fits their body, sleep position, and priorities.

What the SleepPrint score means

The SleepPrint score is a mattress-quality score, not a promise that one mattress will fit every sleeper. It answers: how strong is this mattress across the traits most likely to affect sleep comfort, support, durability, and ownership experience?

Reader-facing score

The final weighted result is reported on a 1-10 scale with one decimal place and a plain-language performance tier.

  • Observable mattress performance: support, pressure relief, motion control, edge stability, responsiveness, and heat behavior.
  • Ownership evidence: price, warranty, trial terms, return friction, delivery friction, certifications, and material disclosure.
  • Research-informed weighting so the largest categories map to comfort, support, pressure, and temperature rather than marketing novelty.
  • Affiliate payouts, ad buys, brand relationships, or retailer availability.
  • Medical claims, diagnosis, or a guarantee that a mattress will resolve pain or sleep disorders.
  • Hidden bonuses for popular brands, luxury pricing, or features that only matter to a narrow sleeper group.

How the number is calculated

Every category receives a 1-10 score. That score is multiplied by the category weight. The weighted points are added and divided by 100.

SleepPrint = Σ(category score × category weight) ÷ 100

Example

If comfort scores 8.6 and carries a 15% weight, it contributes 129 weighted points before the model divides by 100.

Rounding

Category scores can use decimals internally. Public SleepPrint scores round to one decimal place so small measurement noise does not look more precise than it is.

Missing data

If a core category cannot be tested or verified, the review must disclose the gap. We do not fill missing evidence with brand claims.

The 12 weighted categories

Weights are intentionally uneven. Research and consumer data point to comfort, firmness/support, temperature, and pain-related pressure concerns as the most important mattress-specific satisfaction drivers, so core sleep performance carries half the score.

Why the weights are evidence-informed, not arbitrary

Mattress research is still smaller than sleep-duration or sleep-disorder research, so the honest standard is evidence-informed weighting: use peer-reviewed sleep-surface studies where they exist, use large satisfaction data where it is stronger, and label editorial judgment clearly.

Comfort, firmness, temperature

The Boston Mattress Satisfaction Questionnaire identifies comfort, firmness, temperature, and overall satisfaction as its core mattress-satisfaction items, with strong internal consistency in a U.S. adult sample.

Medium-firm support and alignment

Systematic reviews and controlled trials generally favor medium-firm or individually adjusted sleep surfaces for comfort, sleep quality, and spinal alignment over very firm surfaces.

Pressure distribution

Pressure-mapping studies show that both over-concentrated pressure and poorly distributed support can hurt sleep comfort, which is why pressure relief is scored separately from broad comfort.

Thermal microclimate

Sleep-environment research supports the role of bedding and microclimate in sleep physiology, so cooling is measured directly instead of treated as marketing copy.

Value, support, durability

The J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Mattress Satisfaction Study ranks comfort, value, support, and durability among the leading satisfaction factors.

Do not overstate precision

The exact percentages are Nappedia's editorial model. The science supports the direction and relative importance; it does not prove that comfort must be exactly 15% rather than 14%.

How each category is supported

The score is only as useful as the evidence behind it. Each category is labeled by the strongest evidence type used for that category so readers can separate measured performance from sourced policies and editorial interpretation.

Why sleeper fit is shown beside the score

A mattress can be excellent overall and still be wrong for a specific sleeper. SleepPrint keeps the base score focused on the mattress itself, then adds a visible fit layer for personal variables.

Each review translates the category evidence into fit guidance across sleep position, body weight, heat sensitivity, partner disturbance, and mobility needs. Fit is shown as strong, mixed, or limited.

This prevents double-counting. Support and pressure relief already carry 26% of the base score, so adding a hidden "side sleeper bonus" would inflate the same traits twice.

How to read a SleepPrint score

The tier labels are intentionally conservative. A mattress needs balanced performance across the high-weight categories to reach the top tiers.

Best-in-class performance with no meaningful weakness in core categories.

Outstanding for most sleepers, with only minor tradeoffs.

8.5-8.9Very Good

Strong, recommendable performance with clear strengths.

8.0-8.4Good

Competitive mattress with some category-level compromises.

7.5-7.9Acceptable

Works for specific needs or budgets, but compare alternatives.

7.0-7.4Fair

Several weaknesses; only worth considering for a narrow use case.

Rules that keep scores honest

Scoring rules exist to prevent hidden judgment calls from turning into hidden score manipulation.

What the methodology cannot prove

It is not medical advice

Mattress research can inform support and comfort decisions, but pain, insomnia, sleep apnea, and chronic sleep problems require clinical guidance.

Long-term durability is partly predictive

Foam density, coil design, latex content, warranty thresholds, and owner data help estimate durability, but years-long wear takes time to verify.

Product specs are uneven

Some brands publish densities, coil counts, certifications, and fire-barrier details; others do not. Transparency affects confidence.

Individual fit still matters

The same surface can feel softer or firmer depending on body weight, shape, sleep position, and temperature sensitivity.
